Every automobile needs regular maintenance work. It may be oil change, wiper blade replacement, transmission fluid change or brake pad replacement. You can save a lot of money if you take the steps described below.
- Buy parts at cheap price: You can buy the parts that you will need for maintenance work ahead of time. The discount part sellers like Wal-Mart, AutoZone, and Advantage Auto regularly put parts on sale. Sometimes you can get the parts for free, especially during the black Friday sale. You should keep an eye on the sales and buy your parts. If you do not get a sale, buy parts from discount auto parts stores.
- Auto parts store membership: If your favorite auto store offers membership discount, become a member. Most of the memberships are free. If a store wants to charge a fee for membership, evaluate if the membership will ultimately save you money before signing up for membership. For example, AutoZone has membership for free.
- Use online store: Some of the parts like door handle, mirrors etc can be purchased online. EBay is a good website to start. There are other online auto parts stores that you can use.
If you can install the parts by yourself or get an honest mechanic to install it for you, you will save a significant amount of money. You can get information on how to install the parts in owner’s manuals or repair manuals. Also, you can get good video instructions in YouTube, vimeo etc. Be mindful that some of the mechanics will not use your parts. In general, mechanics will charge you at least 3 times of the price you will pay at a discount auto parts store. Selling parts is one of the biggest sources of income for the mechanics. That is why they do not want to use your parts. Do not give up; look for a mechanic who will install it for you if you can not do it yourself.
If you follow the steps above, we think that will save a significant amount of money.
