10 Ways to Reduce College Cost

College education may cost you a lot of money. If you follow some simple steps, you will be able to save a lot of money.  Here are ten simple steps you can use to reduce your college education expense:

  1. Community college:  If you are enrolled in a four year college, ask your college which courses you will be able to transfer from a community college.  Take the transferable courses from the community college.
  2. In-state public college:  Attending an in-state public school will cost you less because of lower tuition, low cost for travel, etc.
  3. Find scholarships:  Apply for scholarships offered by local stores like Burger King, McDonalds, Wal-Mart, Target, and other local stores.  Ask your college adviser how you can find scholarships. Your department head may be able to help you in this regard.
  4. Parent employment education assistance:  Ask your parents if their work place offers education assistance for children.  If you can get such assistance, your education cost will go down.
  5. Graduate early:  The cost of credit hours you take during a semester is not directly proportional to the credit hours you take. Your cost for each credit hour will go down when you enroll for higher than full course load. If you take higher load of courses, you will graduate early and save money.
  6. Use student discount at stores:  Take advantage of student discounts wherever you can find one. Restaurants, buses, department stores, book stores, and phone companies may offer discount for students.
  7. Use inexpensive clothes:  Avoid buying expensive clothes and supplies. Use discount stores like Wal-Mart, Target or online stores.
  8. Use inexpensive electronics:  Shop for cheaper electronics that will meet your needs.
  9. Buy cheap books:  Buy used books from friends or online stores like eBay or amazon.
  10. Lower phone cost:  Lower your phone service cost by limiting use of phones or getting a discount cell phone plan.
